What’s your legacy? How would you answer this question? What legacy have you left behind so far and what legacy have others left on you? As an ex-pupil and now staff at Hot House, a social enterprise with a CSR policy on legacy, I have found myself thinking about this a lot recently.
As a student, Hot House left a huge legacy on me. In early secondary school, I found myself to be extremely shy and reserved. Although by the end of school I didn’t become the biggest chatterbox in band, I definitely became a more outgoing and confident person because of Hot House. Building social skills and working together effectively in groups are great benefits of being a musician. I am extremely grateful for all the people I’ve met through Hot House and truly believe each one of them has left a positive legacy on me, I hold the belief that every single person you meet leaves some sort of legacy on you.

One of the biggest turning points for my confidence was the #coast2coast tour of the USA in 2018. During these two weeks, the band really became a family. This video sums up the atmosphere of the tour – it was incredible.

Playing on stage in ‘Snug Harbor’ (https://snugjazz.com/music-room) in New Orleans was the highlight for me and this experience still seems surreal today. A shy teenager from Derby having the opportunity to play onstage in a club in the birthplace of jazz is not something that happens every day and remains one of the proudest moments of my life.
Although I was a member for 7 years, I feel that my journey with Hot House is only just beginning. As an apprentice, one of my personal development targets is to become an extremely effective communicator. I am lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing communicators at Hot House and am so excited to learn from the team now that I work with them every day.
I want to be proud of the legacy I leave at Hot House. I am inspired by the kindness and experiences I have been given whilst being a student and I am so excited to be a part of giving the next generation of students the same amazing times that I have had. There is nothing more motivating then knowing that I am part of a phenomenal group of people who have a real positive impact on students’ lives, including my own.
