On Saturday 26th June, Hot House Music in partnership with Leeds Conservatoire hosted a series of exciting live Jazz workshops for their students, led by university tutor and acclaimed musician Tori Freestone. The Covid secure event aimed to inspire the next generation of Derby musicians to hit the high notes and consider a future career pathway in music.
Students from Hot House’s Big Band, Debut and Superstar Hotshot Bands – ranging in age from 13 to 18 – benefitted from Tori’s musical expertise as a professional saxophonist, flautist and violinist, as she shared her vast knowledge and skills with the students during the sessions.
As well as teaching for Leeds Conservatoire, Tori has played alongside artists such as Jamie Cullum and Jim Hart and features in many of the UK’s most exciting ensembles, including The UK All Star Big Band with Hermeto Pascoal and The London Jazz Orchestra. Hot House’s young musicians had the opportunity to play together with Tori and ask questions about what life is really like in the music industry.
The event was organised as part of Leeds Conservatoire’s Community Outreach Programme and Tori’s visit served to strengthen existing links between the university and Hot House, as Jon Eno BEM, CEO of Hot House Music explains:
“Leeds Conservatoire is one of the most forward-thinking University options for young music students today. As an alumnus of the college, I have always been amazed at how both industry and student centric their approach to welfare and the creative arts has been. They have a legacy of developing some of the greatest artists in the world and this fantastic opportunity to work with their tutors will engage and inspire students from our Debut and Superstar Jazz Academies. We are particularly excited to welcome Tori Freestone to Derby to engage with our amazing students.”
Having last visited Derby to play for the Julian Siegal Jazz Orchestra, Tori is delighted to be back – this time to inspire the next generation of talented musicians. She says:
“After more than a year of restrictions, it is wonderful that we now have the chance to run this event – big bands are all about being together and working as part of a team. We will focus on the importance of listening to each other, dynamics and injecting musicality into our performance. It will be great to work on some familiar pieces and explore some new approaches to improvisation. Nothing beats working with young musicians and I’m excited to hear what we can produce together.”
