Musical Xander hits all the right notes at Chetham’s

As the October school holidays approach, it’s a time of extra excitement for musical Xander Johnson as he returns to Derby to spend the break with his family. With suitcases packed, the talented 12 year old is heading home after completing his first half term as a student at the prestigious Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester.

Xander – who plays the double bass, piano and church organ – secured a coveted place at the school after making a video application during the Covid lockdown where he wowed tutors with his musical skills. He is now a boarder at the school during term time where he will study for 8 GCSEs, including his favourite subject – music.

A previous student of Derby based Hot House Music, Xander’s musical journey began early as his mum Katy recalls:

“It’s hard to say how long Xander has been interested in music; his older brothers Joe and Sam played in Hot House’s Big Band so he was going along to rehearsals since before he was born – he was known as the ‘Band Baby’! As soon as he was old enough, he started to play and eventually joined the Saturday Hot Shots, Jam and Caliente bands.  The boys all gained so much from being part of the bands as well as having lessons – it was so much fun for them, making friends and learning to think independently. I’m sure that being part of these ensembles helped sparked Xander’s enthusiasm for music and gave him confidence in his creative abilities as a musician. He is really enjoying himself in Manchester and has settled in very well – we are delighted he has been given the opportunity to follow his passion at Chetham’s.”

Hot House Music’s Stuart McCrone, one of Xander’s teachers and band director added:

“We are all extremely proud of Xander; he has huge potential as a musician. We wish him all the very best with his future success and hope he enjoys his learning journey at Chetham’s. He will always be part of the Hot House family and we hope to see him again soon when he is back in Derby.”

Jon Eno BEM, CEO of Hot House Music said:

“Music is the gift we all need for a happy life. There are no time restraints, there are no limits to where when or what you can learn play or communicate. We are immensely proud of Xander and his whole family, apart from being amazing musicians they are lovely human beings who understand that the world needs kindness and empathy to evolve.”
