Over the past few months, the other apprentices and I have been working on a creating a podcast. This project has really put my skills to the test, because even though I have experience working with media projects and editing audio, this was a whole new territory.
When we were first asked to create the podcast, I had no clue where to start. I had listened to some of the Mark Kermode film podcasts for homework before, https://open.spotify.com/show/0xJnhlb6EQtLA9C2Gyz4be, but I never really considered what went into making a podcast.
So I went and did some research and I even did a short course run by the University of Wollongong Australia https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/podcasting which was really useful and gave me a lot of insight to what a podcast could be. One of the first things I learnt was that the title is everything. As a company we kept throwing names back and forth until we finally decided on TRIBE. TRIBE is a term often used in Hot House, as we are a community of close-knit staff and students.
Coming up with the title was the easiest part. From there it was all about contacting the students in our Superstar and Pro Jazz academies (https://hhmusic.co.uk/product/der-sub-y20-eja-pro/?school-name=Derby) and asking them to record a one to two minute talk about something that they love or that they are passionate about. We got through some really interesting talks ranging from a comparison between the jazz and classical saxophone to film music and even micro-tonality.
After collating all these audio clips, it was a case of getting together with one of the other apprentices and recording all our joint audio. For me this was the hardest part, because even though we could get a conversation going, we couldn’t really feed off what the students said as all we had was an audio recording. However, we got there and managed to get everything recorded. Once we got into the flow of things, it came more naturally.
Something we had to decide at the very start was what distribution service we were going to use. We put in a lot of research, and came to the conclusion to use Anchor https://anchor.fm/features. Anchor is a free distribution site, which also provides you with free editing tools and the option of monetising your podcast.
The production of this first season has been a learning experience, and we still have a lot to learn. But that’s what season two is all about.
If you haven’t already, go and give TRIBE a listen. It is available to listen to on all major streaming platforms. https://open.spotify.com/show/2pt4DTIWwgoJ5ugFoOCjlP?si=bbEU-HbxRGOT4b1eP-GbqA
