Leading wind instrument manufacturer Yamaha is supporting an upcoming webinar by British trombonist Callum Au. Delivered in association with Hot House Music Schools and scheduled for March 5th 2021, the webinar provides a unique opportunity to learn from one of the UK’s leading trombone players, and to gain an insight into his wider career as a highly successful composer, arranger, orchestrator.
Highly regarded for his stylistic awareness, Au has written music to be performed and recorded by some of the world’s biggest artists including Jamie Cullum, Randy Brecker, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and Burt Bacharach.
And this versatile young musician has also established himself as one of the busiest arrangers and orchestrators in the country. In 2016 he was commissioned to arrange ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You’ for Quincy Jones’ 80th birthday concert at the BBC Proms with the Metropole Orchestra and that same year, he arranged and orchestrated Jessie J’s Christmas single ‘The Man with the Bag’. More recent arranging and orchestration work includes the Friday Night is Music Night Live series with Tom Chaplin & Imelda May, the big band scenes in the hit film ‘A Royal Night Out’, and Beverley Knight’s 25th anniversary concert at the Festival Hall.
‘I Can’t Stop Loving You – BBC Proms 2016, Quincy Jones and the Metropole Orchestra’ –
Widely recognised as one of the UK’s most exciting young trombone talents, Callum has been a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra (RSJO) since 2012, performing alongside top international artists including Curtis Stigers, Seth MacFarlane, Maria Schneider, and at venues including the Cheltenham Festival, the Albert Hall, and Buckingham Palace. Responsible for composing and arranging a substantial proportion of the band’s current working repertoire, Callum has also worked as a freelance trombonist with most of the top big bands and jazz ensembles in the UK, for multiple West End musicals, at the BBC Proms, and as a session musician on many recordings for film and TV.
A pupil of veteran UK trumpeter Terry Reaney, Callum joined Bill Ashton’s National Youth Jazz Orchestra at the age of 15 and these early opportunities have clearly helped to install within him a strong commitment to connecting with and inspiring the next generation of players.
Commenting on behalf of Yamaha, Product Marketing Specialist Jeremy Smith says, “Yamaha is all about empowering people to experience the joy of making music so it’s great to see Yamaha artists like Callum giving so generously of their time and expertise. Of course this webinar is a must for trombonists, but Callum’s experience as a composer, arranger and orchestrator suggests there’ll be something of interest for all big band and jazz ensemble players.”
