I won’t lie, trying something completely new is pretty scary, but the long-term outcomes can be worth the nerves. Children and young people should not be afraid to try something new, like playing an instrument, as they could end up really enjoying themselves and discovering a new interest or skill. It also helps develops qualities such as: bravery, confidence, courage and self-belief which are beneficial when growing up.

I’ll never forget when I attended a Hot House band for the first time; I had no idea what I was doing. I was just starting year 6, had only played the flute a couple of times and had shown up without an instrument. The only spare instrument they had was a bass and at the time, I didn’t even know what that was but I said yes anyway and I ended up having a great time.

4 years later, I took this a step further and spent a week doing work experience with Hot House Music. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience getting to see the behind the scenes of the company and how many responsibilities they have. Not a day went by without me coming home smiling ear to ear; eager to tell my parents about the day I had.

Now after years of playing bass and joining other bands that are out of my comfort zone, I’ve fallen in love with music and decided to take an apprenticeship with Hot House and so far it has been amazing!

It is truly exciting to see children and young people doing the same and discovering what they love; all starting from trying something new. So don’t be shy, because that small decision can open many new doors for the future.
